OVERVIEW:

The Revised BC Exams are now fully compatible with our BC Calculus Student and Solution mauals. Every chapter in the manual is tested in one or more of the 37 exams/quizzes below. So the Manual and Exams together represent a full AP^® Calculus syllabus for BC.

My exams take several forms:

Quizzes: meant to take up less than a full class period.

Exams: meant to take a full class period.

Practice quizzes and exams: same format as a quiz and given to students 2 days earlier and gone over in class the day before the quiz or exam. Practice exams tell the student exactly what to expect and takes away the statement: "I thought I knew it."

Take home exams: students take it home and return it the next day. There is a risk in giving this type of exam and some of these have different forms so no two students do the exact same problem.

AP Type: A 9-point exam in the same format of an AP^® Free Response problem. Good students panic when they only get 6 out of 9 points and I like to tell them that if they get 2/3 of the 108 points in the AP exam, they most likely will get a 5.  It is also neat to have students grade each other's papers although with today's confidentiality laws, be sure that you are on firm ground.

Comprehensive Exams: An exam that will cover everything taught so far in the course. We have a quarterly and midterm comprehensive. No final comprehensive is given as these typically are practice AP exams which we have available in our 4 AP^® Exams.

Schools that teach BC calculus do so in different ways. Some simply teach the BC essential topics as either part of the AB course or in a separate course. Others teach a traditional Calculus 2 course including the non-essential topics included in the BC manual. Based on the way the course is taught, comprehensive exams will include different types of problems. We include exams for the course taught using both methods.

I am one of those teachers who return exams immediately and students appreciate the quick feedback. I look at an exam as a learning experience and a way for them to gauge how well students have mastered information. Still, going over exams can take a great deal of time, time that is at a premium in an AP^® course. To that end, I give a solution key to the students for every exam and let them go over their mistakes by themselves. We will still go over problems that the class in general had trouble with but students are asked to compare their exams to the solution key to understand their errors. The solution key is just that - not just a set of answers but the process used to solve each problem.

You are free to use any or all of these exams. You are also free to white-out the website at the bottom of each page. You can come up with the answers yourself or purchase the full set of solutions.
