"Calculus On The Wall" - AB Powerpoints
Automated, illustrated, and narrated calculus lessons.
Teaching AP® Calculus is tough. Unlike algebra which is a lot of drill work, calculus involves theory. Students cannot do well in calculus unless they understand the underlying theory behind it. As a calculus teacher, you must explain the theory, along with the limit, derivative and integral mechanics and somehow tie all of this information together with real-life examples. It is a daunting task, especially for relatively new teachers who are asked to teach an AP Calculus course.
A good calculus course requires students to visualize what occurs as x gets closer to a value; how a secant line approaches a tangent line; how tangent lines can be used to approximate tangent lines; how curves can have relative extrema; how a searchlight moving along a wall has changing velocities; how areas under a curve can be approximated with a sum of rectangular areas; how the spread of a disease can change, etc. Technology is needed to illustrate much of what makes calculus come alive. Gone are the days when just a textbook and a blackboard are sufficient to teach calculus. A good calculus teacher must be a master of technology as well.
MasterMathMentor proudly presents Calculus on the Wall - 14 Powerpoints that cover all of the AB Calculus curriculum. What makes these slide shows unique is that they are narrated - what occurs on the screen was written by Stu and explained by a professional reader in an easy-to-listen-to style. The Powerpoints are also provided in un-narrated versions, with you receiving a script of the narration so you can do the teaching yourself, if you so choose.
Calculus on the Wall slide shows vary between 16 slides and 33 slides. There is a lot happening on each slide and any one of them might represent an entire lesson for you on a particular day. When appropriate, there are animations on the slides that illustrate tangent lines, areas, related rates, and straight-line motion. It is a dynamic way of learning calculus and you can sit back and let our carefully chosen examples illustrate the important theory, applications, and solutions. Along with having Powerpoint on your computer, the only mastery of technology you need is to be able to click a mouse!
Calculus on the Wall Powerpoints are completely editable. They are organized so that narrations occur automatically with text blocks, tables, animations and graphics that appear and disappear on the slide. If you have a knowledge of Powerpoint, you can completely alter any or all of slides to your specifications. For instance, you could require a mouse click to move from one screen element and narration to another. You have full control based on your teaching style and can tailor the programs to fit the needs of your class.
Calculus on the Wall Powerpoints are compatible with the Windows version of Microsoft Office 2010 and later and the Mac version of Microsoft Office 2011 and later. It is recommended that if you show these in a classroom setting, that you add speakers to your computer to be sure that everyone can hear.
A current trend in education is "flipping the classroom." Flipping occurs when students learn new content online by watching video lectures, usually at home. What used to be homework is now done in class. The classroom thus becomes a place with more student interaction and personalized guidance by the teacher. For schools that are interested in this teaching style, Calculus on the Wall becomes a perfect way to introduce all the major concepts of AP Calculus to students in a "flipped classroom" setting, assuming that the students have Powerpoint on their home computers.
You can order Calculus on the Wall with a license to upload the narrated version to your school's private website or Moodle to give your students access to it. In addition, Calculus on the Wall works well with students who are home-schooled.
This new Powerpoint series is a wonderful addition to our lineup, whether you just need one Calculus on the Wall slide show to enhance a challenging topic to teach, or the entire series that you can use to cover the AB calculus curriculum completely. The programs will take the onus off your shoulders to present interesting and dynamic lessons, allowing you to concentrate more on the progress of your students.
Sample Slide Shows:
All 14 of the Calculus on the Wall AB Powerpoint slide shows can be previewed as a sample version, each containing 4 content slides that will give you a taste of the topics covered. For each Powerpoint, you can download both a narrated version to give you a feel of the quality and pace of the narration as well as an un-narrated version.
